Mariya Johnson and Janecia Chatman killed in school bus accident

On Behalf of | Sep 16, 2015 | Wrongful Death |

Two Houston ISD students, Mariya Alyss Johnson and Janecia Chatman, were killed and three others, including the driver were injured in a bus accident yesterday. The accident resulting in potential wrongful death claims occurred at 610 South Loop and Telephone Road. Curiously, the accident was caused by a Houston ISD teacher likely driving to work at the time. Investigations show that the teacher, who was driving a Buick LeSabre, thought that another vehicle was veering into her lane, which led the teacher to swerve and strike the bus. The impact caused the school bus to crash through the guardrail and off the 610 loop plunging onto Telephone Road.

17-year-old Mariya Alyss Johnson succumbed to her injuries at the scene. 14-year-old Janecia Chatman was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital but passed away shortly thereafter. Two of the other teens, Lakeisha Williams and Brandon Williams, are thought to have been severely injured in the crash and were also transported to the hospital where they remain. Lakeisha and Brandon are thought to be relatives of Janecia. The driver, Luisa Pacheco, was also injured, but the extent of her injuries is unknown. We are deeply saddened by these events and continue to pray for the families of all those involved

The fated school bus was making its routine commute to Furr High School at the time of the crash. The teacher that caused the accident was questioned after the accident, but no charges have been filed. The bus driver appears to have a clear driving record. And, the bus appears to have been maintained regularly.
