Too many child burn injuries occur from fireworks in Texas

Too many children are burned due to fireworks accidents. Sometimes a burn injury can lead to a wrongful death case involving a child. With the Fourth of July around the corner, we all should allow professionals to handle fireworks. Let's be spectators. Too many Fourth of July celebrations are ruined because children are taken to the hospital Firework injuries can lead to blindness and scarring.

Did you know that children are the most common victims of firework accidents? Adults think that sparklers are safe for children, but they are the cause for at least one-third of firework injuries. The sparkling sticks can burn at nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That amount of heat can cause a third-degree burn.

Fireworks are not toys. Therefore, children should not play with them. On several occasions, bottle rocket type fireworks have caused injury to the face and eyes. Children have lost an eye or suffered from partial blindness. In many of these situations, a parent was nearby, watching or instructing the child. The parents later suffer from guilt for the encouragement to their children to play with or handle fireworks. The physicians at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston can tell you story after story.

Leave the fireworks to the professionals.
