What are common causes of wrongful death car accidents in Texas?

On Behalf of | Feb 21, 2014 | Wrongful Death |

Here are some facts pertaining to Texas deadly car accidents:

Texas is one of the most populated states in the country. It makes sense that there is a relatively high fatal auto accident rate, but the truth about these crashes is both unfortunate. According to figures provided by the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2012 (the most recent year for which relevant data is available), nearly 3,400 Texans lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents.

On average, someone died from injuries sustained in a Texas automobile accident every 2 hours, 35 minutes. There was a motor vehicle accident-related injury every two minutes, 17 seconds. Reported vehicle accidents happened every 75 seconds. This means that there was not a single auto accident fatality-free day in Texas throughout the entirety of 2012.

The Texas Department of Transportation reports that nearly 2,000 of the 3,399 fatal accidents in 2012 were alcohol-related.

What are common causes of fatal accidents?

Answer: (1) Speeding; (2) Distracted driving (particularly driving while texting or talking on a cellphone, a dangerous yet common practice in spite of legislative bans on handheld and hands-free cellphones for all drivers and texting for both novice drivers and those operating buses); (3) Reckless driving (including driving too fast for conditions, failing to yield the right of way or violation of other important traffic laws); (4) Driving while fatigued (“drowsy driving” can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated); (5) Vehicle maintenance neglect or design defects.

The common causes listed above can lead to a wrongful death case in Texas.
