A construction work zone was the location of multiple car accidents on I-30 in Northeast Texas on Friday morning. Though the actual series of events and cause is still being determined, the Royse City Police have found that the accidents were caused by a hole that opened up in outermost lane of 1-30 westbound near Erby Campbell Boulevard.
A car traveling westbound on I-30 inadvertently struck the cavity and then swerved into the concrete barrier. Separately, an 18-wheeler also struck the hole, which blew out one tire, and then struck the same car. The trailer of the 18-wheeler jackknifed through the concrete barrier that divides both sides of the highway. An SUV traveling in the opposite direction then struck the barrier and/or the trailer.
The area of the accident had temporary paving that coincided with the recent construction of an overpass. Due to the accident and damage, the portion of the highway running through Royse City remained closed throughout the weekend.
Ambulances responding to the accident had difficulty reaching the scene and those injured due to the accident blocking both sides of the highway and the traffic jam that ensued. Fortunately, none of the seven individuals injured suffered critical injuries.
Work zones can be areas of danger to both the workers and the motorists driving past them. Proper placing of barricades and signs, along with traffic control measures can often prevent car accidents.
