A school bus accident in Athens, Texas resulted in injuries to nine children. On Wednesday afternoon, two Athens Independent School District buses transporting children between the ages of five and ten were involved in an accident.
The accident occurred near the bus bar when one of the buses was rear ended by the other. The buses involved were buses 13 and 14. After striking bus 13, bus 14 veered into a parking lot of a lab and struck three parked, vacant cars. Following the crash, bus 13 traveled about 150 yards before coming to a stop. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The nine injured children were treated for minor injuries such as bumps, bruises, and fractures. Of the nine children injured in this bus accident, only one was reported to have critical injuries. The driver of one of the buses will be unable to return to work for some time due to a broken wrist. As many as 60 students were taken to local hospitals as a precautionary measure.
Although Athens Independent School District buses have resumed their regular routes today, some of the parents may still have lingering anxiety in terms of their children’s safety and might wonder who is to blame. Could a distracted driver have caused the accident? Perhaps the driver did not have the appropriate training or the buses had not been serviced adequately.
