Distracted Driving Simulation Raises Awareness in Texas

Distracted driving car accidents in Texas and nationwide have shown a steady increase. Statistics show that Texas has seen an increase in traffic-related fatalities of nearly 10% this year alone, many of which have been partly attributed to distracted drivers.

A recent simulation conducted by the Texas Department of Transportation (TX-DOT) at the Grayson County Texas Travel Center allowed drivers to take part in a simulated distracted driving course. A TX-DOT official went along for the "drive" and played a part in the distraction by prompting the drivers to perform tasks such as checking text messages. The simulation was held to create awareness and prevent fatalities, especially during the traffic-busy holiday season. Though the simulation may have been casual, the message is serious.

Many of us have become so used to driving distracted that we do not even notice the distractions anymore. Activities such as eating, texting, grooming, etc. have become so ingrained in our driving routines that they are hardly even noticeable. Our growing obsession with smart phones and social media sites has only added fuel to the fire, and may very well be the cause of many car accidents.

The exact moment you take your eyes away from the road to reach for your phone, could be the same moment a child is running onto the street. Car accidents happen in a matter of seconds. Not only is distracted driving unsafe, it is also irresponsible and you could end up hurting yourself as well as others.

If you or a loved one has been injured by a distracted driver and have questions, call a Texas personal injury lawyer at 713-454-7875.
