A Houston history professor is getting his life back on track after losing a foot and almost losing his life following a car accident in 2011. The life-changing accident occurred on Aug. 18. After extensive physical therapy, the 52-year-old man is learning to walk again and looking to returning to school — as a student.

The Richmond resident’s life changed forever when another driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the passenger side of car he was driving; his mother, then 84, was a passenger. She sustained two broken arms in the car accident, but the man’s injuries were life-threatening. He was trapped in the car and had to be removed by firefighters. He lost consciousness while being airlifted to a Houston hospital, and his heart stopped during one of the numerous surgeries he underwent.

The man sustained a broken hip, neck and left femur. His right foot was twisted so badly, he opted to have it amputated rather than undergo an estimated 20 surgeries that couldn’t totally repair the damage. After undergoing intensive physical therapy, he is now able to walk with a quad-cane and drive a car. He has returned to work at the college, with plans to attend law school to become a lawyer.

Car accidents can change lives forever as this story illustrates. This victim’s treatment regime is not finished; he will never return to his normal life. Victims who suffer catastrophic injuries caused the another’s negligence may be entitled to financial compensation for their injuries. A personal injury lawyer may be able to assist in getting restitution for complicated injuries like this by gathering the documentation, including medical records and bills, police reports and photos, to submit to the liability insurance company. He or she may then negotiate a settlement for the victim.
