A woman pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter in a Texas car accident that killed two people and seriously injured another. The 23-year-old woman changed her original plea of not guilty on Aug. 1, 2013.

The at-fault driver drove the wrong way on the North Freeway. Witnesses who saw her traveling northbound in the southbound lanes made calls to 911. Police did not have a chance to stop the woman before the car accident. The woman’s car collided with another car that was carrying three people.

Two people in the car were killed by the impact. One was 19 years old; the other was 18 years old. Authorities were able to view a video of the at-fault motorist driving the wrong way. They were also able to obtain a video of the driver drinking a total of four beers and 17 shots at a local bar before she allegedly walk to her truck and drive away. According to authorities, the woman’s blood-alcohol level was well above the legal limit. The at-fault driver pled guilty to two charges of vehicular manslaughter and one charge of aggravated assault with a vehicle. If she is convicted of the offenses, she could face around 40 years in prison.

Motor vehicle accidents such as this one can be avoided if proper precautions are followed. Someone who has consumed a high amount of alcohol should call a cab or have a friend drive them home. Unfortunately, many drivers fail to realize how intoxicated they are before they get into their vehicles. Victims who are injured by an intoxicated driver may face numerous complications after the car crash. They may not be able to return to work in a timely manner and may have hospital bills that they cannot repay. A personal injury attorney may be able to help someone who has been injured in a car accident by a drunk driver get on the road to recovery.
