While this blog constantly preaches about the need for drivers to be more aware of their surroundings, one of the things that drivers always seem to forget about is the need to pay attention to the cars right in front of them. Sudden stops in traffic can happen at any time, and drivers need to be prepared in order to avoid the kind of car accident that happened recently in Houston.
According to Houston police, a woman was driving in the early morning hours this week on the North Freeway feeder road when her Honda Civic was rear-ended by a Nissan Versa.

The force of the crash sent the Civic into a concrete pillar, and the woman was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The other car was sent flying through a chain-link fence before coming to rest in a parking lot.
Sadly, the driver of the other car panicked and called a relative to come pick her up. The woman left her car abandoned at the scene. Fortunately the relative then convinced the woman to go back to the scene of the accident. Police conducted a sobriety and blood test to determine her blood alcohol content. No charges have been filed yet, but an investigation could reveal that the woman is at fault.
Rear-end accidents can happen for many different reasons. In this case, it’s unknown if the cars were in motion or if the Civic was stopped when it was slammed into by the Versa. If traffic ahead is stopped, there’s almost never an acceptable reason to be caught unaware. And a driver should be able to control his or her speed enough to avoid rear-ending a moving vehicle.
