Young Texan opens up about texting and driving dangers

This blog has previously discussed the dangers of distracted driving, but now someone is willing to share his story as a warning to others about what can happen when one decides to text while behind the wheel.

The 21-year-old college student is opening up about his experience after spending the last six months in a hospital rehabilitating from a brain injury. While driving on Jan. 24, the young man drove his pickup truck off the road and into a creek. Fortunately some friends were nearby to pull him out of his truck, which had caught on fire. In addition to the brain injury, he broke his neck, sternum, both ankles and several bones in his face.

The young man was sending a text at the time of the accident. He says the last text he sent was: "This is dumb. If we keep doing this I'm going to wreck my truck, going to get in a car crash."

His recovery has been deemed extraordinary by his doctors and his family, and he is expected to make a full recovery, although his brain injury will make finishing college tougher.

The young man is thankful that he has a second chance at life, and he said he's going to use it to warn people about the dangers of texting while driving.

Luckily this man did not cause any other injuries when he wrecked his truck. If he did his family could have been held liable for those injuries while their own son was trying to get rehabilitated. It's good that this young man has learned an important lesson; others need to start paying attention to him.
