Brenda Cantu Rear-ended Alice, TX ISD school bus, no injuries

On September 1, 2015, a car rear-ended an Alice Independent School District bus around 4pm. 19-year old Brenda Lee Cantu was driving a grey colored Chrysler when she struck the school bus at an intersection. The bus was loaded with young students. The accident occurred in the midst of busy traffic.

Fortunately, none of the 43 students were injured by the bus accident. The bus driver was also unscathed. Nevertheless, authorities called in emergency personnel to ensure that if someone required medical attention they would receive it.

The Chrysler was relatively undamaged, although there was slight damage to the hood of the vehicle. According to local law enforcement, appeared disturbed by the accident. Cantu expressed concern for the children on the bus who were about 12-years-old.

She received two citations. One was for a driver’s license violation, and the other was because she did not control her speed while driving. Later, a licensed driver appeared to aide her.

According to TEA Bus Accident Reporting in 2013-2014, there was a total of 47 students involved in accidents in the Alice Independent School District. However, there were only a total of 2 injuries. There were no fatalities in school transportation that year. 

In Texas from 2013-2014, there were a total of 392 student injuries, although only 9 were serious injuries. There was also 69 bus driver injuries, 8 pedestrian injuries, 6 nonfatal pedestrian injuries caused by school transportation, and only 1 pedestrian fatality. This data represented 1,031 Texas school districts that submitted data on the accidents that occurred with school transportation.
