Clark Brandon Davis, from Arlington, Texas, was killed and three others were injured in a road accident when a Crowley-based tractor-trailer crashed into a bridge construction project on I-35 near Salado, Texas. The tractor-trailer was being driven by Valentin Martinez, a Lares Trucking employee at about 11:30 AM when it the top of the vehicle hit the bottom of the bridge. This caused two concrete beams to fall from the bridge onto the highway. One of the beams fell onto another tractor-trailer and a pick-up truck was crushed as well. The driver of the truck, Davis, died from the injuries he sustained in the accident. Three others were injured as well, but only one was admitted to the hospital.

Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation have stated that the tractor-trailer was too tall to clear the bridge, as the load is estimated to have been 14 feet, 7 inches. Three signs that were posted before the bridge indicated that the clearance was 13 feet 6 inches. This was lower than the bridge’s true height, 14.5 feet. Nevertheless, another report issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety stated that regardless of the bridge’s height, the truck was not permitted to carry an oversized load. The owner of the truck, Julian Lares, stated that he did have the permit to carry the load. It is unclear as to whether the rig passed the bridge safely and then the beam fell or if the accident occurred because of the rig’s oversized load.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the victim’s family. We imagine that they have been deeply saddened by this tragedy. We wonder if this case could trigger a wrongful death claim.
