A fire allegedly injured two people at a Chevron Phillips plant on Monday night. Luckily no fatalities, wrongful death, was reported. The fire was believed to have started at about 8 p.m. Monday. The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation.
The Chevron Philips refinery where the fire broke out is located in Port Arthur, about 90 miles east of Houston.
Thought the fire was quickly contained, the individuals’ burn injuries were significant enough to require immediate emergency medical attention. One of the individuals was transported to a Houston area hospital. The other person was taken to a hospital in Galveston. The two individuals remain hospitalized for treatment.
Chevron Phillips assured that all personnel were accounted for. However, it has not confirmed whether the two injured individuals are employees.
The cause of the fire remains under internal and official investigation and is yet to be determined. Curiously, the Port Arthur Fire Department was not called to the scene of the fire.
Burn injuries often leave lifelong scarring and disfigurement and can even end in wrongful death. If in fact, the two injured people are employees they may have a claim against Chevron Phillips for their injuries and damages. It is an employer’s responsibility to ensure the safety of its employees. Safety precautions and training are particularly important in high-risk areas such as refineries.
