Winter's not done yet: exercise caution when driving in snow

With spring just around the corner, it's likely that many people in Texas may assume that the worst of the winter weather is over. But many Texans received a harsh reminder this week, as a punishing winter storm system moved through parts of the state, dumping several inches of snow in several spots.

Some parts of north Texas received up to 17 inches of snow, according to some reports. And the most important thing to remember with weather like this is that accidents usually follow. In an area such as Texas, which doesn't get as much snow as other parts of the country, many drivers may be unaccustomed to driving in the snow.

National Guard troops in Texas had to be deployed to help rural motorists who became stranded in the blizzard conditions. Winds were reportedly hitting tropical-storm force in some parts of the state. With strong winds and low visibility, it is extremely important to slow down.

When dangerous winter weather strikes, it's not enough to just say that you weren't speeding. You need to slow down and drive the speed that conditions allow. Driving fast and dangerously in snow and ice endangers yourself and the occupants of other cars on the roads.

If you have somewhere to be, consider slowing down and leaving earlier, giving you more time to get to your destination. If you are driving recklessly and you cause an accident, you could be held liable for any injuries or deaths caused, even if you were driving below the speed limit. Caution is key.
