Houston construction worker struck, killed by tractor-trailer

Construction zones on the road can be dangerous. Most Houston residents know this. People often have to slow down and change lanes suddenly, which means you need to be on high alert. Adding to the danger is the presence of construction workers. And one worker's family is now left heartbroken after what can only be described as a wrongful death occurred.

According to authorities, the Houston road worker was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while working one recent morning on Interstate 35. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the man was putting up a sign near an exit at approximately 2:00 a.m. one morning when he was struck by the truck.

Appallingly enough, the driver of the truck did not stop. Several witnesses to the accident said the truck kept driving. Police from several local towns and counties tried to find the truck to no avail. Police are also seeking the driver of a Ford pickup truck, because witnesses reportedly saw him trying to get the tractor-trailer to stop.

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation pleaded with motorists to be more careful in construction zones. "The majority of the time, it's speed and inattention that results in our work zone crashes, injuries and fatalities. We want people to be aware and to take [these] things to heart," he said.

While most people know they need to slow down in construction zones, many apparently still do not. Workers can be present at any time, and the warning signs and reduced speed limits are put in place for a reason.
