Suspected drunk driver runs light, kills one in Houston

Readers of this blog are all too aware of the dangers of drunk driving. It not only puts the driver's own life at risk, but it endangers the safety of other drivers, passengers and pedestrians. A recent fatal car accident in northeast Houston was likely caused by a drunk driver, police say.

According to reports, a 48-year-old driver was speeding in his pickup truck late at night near the intersection of the Eastex Freeway and Tidwell Road when he ran a red light. The truck crashed into the passenger side of a Volkswagen, and one of the passengers in that car was killed.

The driver of the Volkswagen also had to be taken to the hospital, but his injuries were described as non-life threatening. The force of the collision pushed the two cars into three other vehicles that were waiting at the red light. Police said that no one in those vehicles was hurt. But with five cars involved, the outcome could have been much worse.

The condition of the man who caused the accident is unknown, but police say the man failed a field sobriety test. He is now being charged with intoxication manslaughter. It's unknown what his blood alcohol content was at the time, but it's possible that more charges could be filed against the man.

Not only was the man apparently driving drunk, but he was speeding and he ran a red light. When one is drunk, they usually get a false sense of confidence that they can get away with things, like driving dangerously. It can be a lethal combination.
